Human personality has a history of being divided into four categories. We call these "Ways".

The concept of dividing personality into quadrants isn't a new one; philosophers and psychologists have applied this paradigm for centuries. What makes Identity Mapping and the Four Way System unique is its focus not on individual personality but on social interaction. We recognize that the need for personality management is in relational application – learning how to develop stronger bonds with others with the knowledge of personality. Identity Mapping is at the forefront of this perspective and has demonstrated success in improving relationships and building empathy and trust. These skills fall under the broader category of Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, has been in the spotlight in recent years for its marked impact on business and personal success and a key factor in healthy relationships. We believe Identity Mapping and the Four Ways system is the easiest and most effective method of navigating social interactions.

Identity Mapping divides personality into four recognizable categories, focusing on decision-making and motivation. Each person has a combination of all four categories, which we call "ways", but one will represent their "primary way". The four ways are Relationship, Organized, Action and Logical. Each way represents a unique mindset and perspective. In learning the Four Way system, you can quickly and easily begin to recognize the primary ways of others, providing insight into their thought processes.

Every person has a combination of all four ways, but we each have a unique combination of the ways that build our personality. This is what we refer to as one's "Identity Map". As you begin interacting with others at work, in your community and at home, you will recognize the groups of behaviors and speech patterns that identify each of the four ways. This allows you to quickly and easily grasp their needs and desires in communication and activity structure, among other things.

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the awareness of one's emotions and those around them, and then the capacity to adapt behavior and relationships through that awareness. EQ isn't natural for everyone. In fact, studies have shown that lack of EQ is the primary cause of professional failure. However, EQ can be learned. At Emergent, we teach individuals and groups the skills needed to increase EQ and strengthen your relationships as a result. First, it's important to understand the different levels of Emotional Intelligence and to understand it takes practice and time to build a strong level of EQ.

Emotional Intelligence

1. Self-Awareness

This first level of EQ is understanding what perspective you bring to a relationship or interaction and how you process information.

2. Self-Management

Mastering your self-awareness gives you control over your emotional decision making and social reactions. This empowers you to respond effectively to tricky relationship environments and adjust your impulse reactions.

3. Group/Social Awareness

Advancing beyond personal management involves learning the nuances of social interaction. This level of EQ is based on understanding the perspective and motivations of others and developing your empathy skills.

4. Relationship Management

The final step in developing strong EQ is learning how to manage your social environment through your understanding of yourself and others. By understanding how to motivate and communicate well with others, we are building trust and allowing ourselves to have difficult conversations with dignity and trust.
